The Piano Studio of Joshua Hegg

Offering In-Person and Virtual Piano Lessons in SE Portland

Hi! I’m Josh

My name is Josh Hegg (he/him) and I’m a professional pianist, music director, and music educator in Portland, OR. With 15 years of teaching experience, I’ve learned how to craft lessons that bring out the best results for my students. My studio is non-method based and lessons are tailored to the student’s interests and goals. While still building a foundation of technique, musicality, and historical context, I believe my first priority is to generate a love of music and the art of music-making.

Even more than the next generation of professional artists, I aim to give students a deep love and respect for the art that they can carry with them the rest of their lives. I believe it is my job to demystify the music-making process and give my students adequate steps and feedback so they can follow this process in their pursuit of making music.

I’m a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) and will be a Tholen Fellow with Portland Piano International starting in 2026. I‘ve also been a featured teaching artist with Portland Center Stage, California State University Chico, the Music Teacher Association of California.

  • "Josh's incredibly tailored piano lessons for our 11yr old have made it his favorite day of the week."

    - August, 2023

  • “It's been an absolute pleasure working with Joshua Hegg. I'm a returning student to the piano…In the few lessons I have taken with him I have already seen significant improvement in my ability to play the instrument and sight read music. Joshua provides informative insights during our practice times together to help maximize the efficiency of playing piano, while minimizing wasted time and energy that detract from ones playing ability.”

    - Spencer, 2024

  • "As an adult (mid-life) student with a strong musical background I found my lessons with Joshua informative and responsive to my needs and interests. Had some insights I would not have made on my own."

    - Rob, 2023

  • "Joshua has taught me sooo much…He's helped me understand how jazz and pop piano players approach songs and given me the tools to mix up my playing. He's created a curriculum specific to my situation, combining reading music with improvisation tools. Now I can play bass lines in my left hand and combine melody with chords in my right hand. Yeah!"
